Celtic traditions speak of “Thin places” that is; the spaces where the feeling of heaven is closer than usual. When I was a child, I would spend hours in the garden foraging and admiring little bugs and leaves, the ornate design in a supposedly chaotic world. And I would get intense moments where I would feel the closeness of something more powerful, more incredible than me. I can’t describe it; it’s a feeling, a sense of awe and wonder that I am not alone, there is more.
This series turned me to recreating those “thin spaces” - “heavenly realms”. Using the seasons as a metaphor for the internal changes of life, I recognise that each season has it’s merits and logic. Through exploring this, it has taught me that within each season, the changing force of nature all around, there are lessons to be learnt. Take for example, the letting go of Autumn, the building up of Spring, the the celebration of Summer, the longing of winter. In creating these paintings, part representational, part imagined, part memory and part revelation, I am hoping to communicate the inherent joy held in creation, in a moment, in a season, and point towards the heavenly realms, accessible in any place and any time, through the slowing down, the noticing, the mindfulness of embracing the season for what it is. In part also, each painting paints itself, allowing the creative process of colour pops and texture to dictate the overall result.
And my biggest hope is that they inspire you towards another realm of reality, whichever season of life you are in, towards awe and wonder, and ultimately, joy. The story started with me, but it continues in any home or place they find themselves in, spreading everyday joy and nudging the viewer towards heavenly realms. How do they speak to you?
